Prickly Pears / Cactus Pear / Opuntia / Barbary Fig

This is a water vise plant and it is a super easy plant to grow.

I have 2 varieties the white/green flesh prickly pear called Morando and Orange prickly pear called the Gymno Carpo variety. There are numerous varieties to try to plant though.

You might need some space to grow a prick pear as they can grow very large. It’s also best to teach kids that prickly pears do have tiny little thorns that can prick you. Hence the name, prickly pear. Therefore best to plant them in an area where kids do not play very often.

The fruits are sweet and delicious it does have lots of thorns, but the taste and flavor are divine.

My plants grow in full sun and they receive water about once a week. Because they are part of the cactus family, they are very drought tolerant so you can water even less than me.

Propagate
The plants are very easy to propagate with cuttings. New cuttings can be watered regularly until established.

Fun fact
When the plant drops a leave, it will grow into a big plant just give it some water to develop roots. You can also plant it in a pot.

Harvest
First do not harvest on windy days, those tiny thorns will blow everywhere.

I use a knife and a pair of tongs, throw them, in a bucket, and wash them. Preferably not with your bare hands πŸ™‚

A tip to peel the fruit is to place a fork in the fruit, cut the two sides of and then cut it sideways not too deep, you do not want to pierce the fruit. Then gently peel the fruit out with the fork and knife.

Cool them in the refrigerator and enjoy! They are absolutely worth the effort!
